Jesus Hernandez, Palace Hotel
Making someone’s day has been a daily mission for Jesus Hernandez in the 16 years he’s been in service at the Palace Hotel. His satisfied guests during the recent months include a nervous suitor preparing to propose to his fiancée without benefit of roses which he forgot to order or champagne, which he left in the car. All of this was relayed to Jesus as he was assisting the guest to his room. Jumping into action, Jesus purchased roses, retrieved the champagne and presented the suitor with the appropriate props for his proposal. Then, there was the case of the little girl who lost her earring on New Montgomery Street because she put her head out the window of the car and the earring fell. Arriving at the Palace red-faced and in tears, Jesus heard her mournful tale. Without a moment’s hesitation, Jesus spent his lunch break walking up and down New Montgomery Street. Yes, he found it, and returned the earring to the astonished family and the delighted child. These wonderful stories nearly pale in comparison to what Jesus has done as a “guardian angel” for the former Bell Captain of the Palace Hotel. When the gentleman became ill with cancer, Jesus looked after him, made him healthy meals and has led the way to raising money for him. Jesus continues to regularly visit his former co-worker, taking gifts and good wishes from the Palace. Angels do walk among us.
